In a single day, on 24 June 1859, some 36,000 soldiers were killed or wounded at the battle of Solferino in northern Italy. Henry Dunant, a young Swiss citizen, who happened to travel to Solferino for business, was shocked by the harrowing scenes of wounded soldiers abandoned on the battlefield. His indignation was such that he was moved to action, organizing right then and there a small group of volunteers to care for the wounded men. Later, this life-changing experience led him to sow the seeds for what was to become the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
To help celebrate the 150 th anniversary of this extraordinary humanitarian act, as well as the 60 th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, you are invited to participate in the "Our world. Your move." campaign by sending a story, a video or photos to the campaign website.
Henry Dunant may have been the quintessential bystander. But in big and small ways, we too can make a difference. As students learning about IHL you are invited to submit your personal stories and experiences related to humanitarian acts. Have you, or someone you know, taken a stand to protect someone's life or human dignity? Have you perhaps initiated or participated in a project aimed at addressing humanitarian needs in your neighbourhood, village, town? If so, we would really like to hear your story.
